Western Diamondback

I headed out to Pedernales Falls State Park yesterday morning to spend some time in the bird blind. In the end, there were very few birds and those that were there were only the usual suspects. The highlight of the trip, though, appeared in the parking lot where a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) was sunning itself in the middle of the road. The visitor who first noticed it called the ranger station and they came and relocated it but not before I had taken this image. I was set up for birds so added a 2x teleconverter to my long lens and zoomed in tight before taking a 15 frame focus bracket which I blended to form the final image.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/11
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Exposure bias: +1EV
  • Focal length: 813mm
  • ISO: 2500
  • Shutter speed: 1/750s
