Juvenile Roadrunner, Texas

There have been roadrunners living on our land for as long as we’ve been here but we’ve never yet stumbled upon their nest site. Today, while out fossil hunting with my 6-year-old, we spotted this juvenile in the middle of a thick cedar tree. He or she was quite happy to stay there while I dashed to get the camera and then led me on a dance for 15 minutes or so as I tried to poke the telephoto through the tangle of branches to get a clear shot. Almost as soon as I lined things up, he (or she?) would hop to another branch and leave me having to set things up again.
