Waiting for the Bats, Congress Ave Bridge, Austin

Each evening during the summer, people gather on Congress Avenue bridge in Austin, waiting for the spectacle of around a million bats leaving to fly east and feed. This bridge is the home of the worlds largest urban colony of Mexican Free Tail bats and the flight is definitely worth seeing.

Last night, we were somewhat unlucky since the bats started taking flight almost half an hour before sunset and their course seemed lower than usual, most flying away below tree level as seen from our vantage point. I had hoped to catch a shot like this with the ribbon of bats visible in the sky but it didn’t happen last night. Maybe next time.
