TXRD: Blocking

I don’t consider myself an expert in Roller Derby rules by any means and, frankly, while shooting this match I didn’t pay attention to the big picture since I was too intent on catching folks as they raced around the track. In simple terms, however, there are two teams each comprising a “jammer” and the main pack. Both teams start a game (or “jam”) from the same position with the pack leading off a couple of seconds ahead of the jammers. The idea of the game is for the jammers to get through the pack and lap as many of the opposing players as possible before the 60 second clock runs out or the jammer in the lead calls an end to the play.

The game is pretty exciting and pretty heated and altercations occur fairly regularly as members of a team try to prevent their opponents’ jammer from getting through the pack.

Dave, I think you actually caught the main part of event here. For a long time, the roller derby was very much seen as professional wrestling on skates. It’s pretty entertaining and I think you’ve captured it well!
