San Jacinto Monument

We’re just back from a great weekend of visiting various historic sites thanks to a 7th grade history project my son has to prepare for school. Our first port of call was the San Jacinto Monument just east of Houston. This enormous obelisk (12 feet taller than the Washington Monument, apparently) stands on the site of the final battle in Texas’ war of independence which resulted in the creation of the Republic of Texas in 1836.

While the tower itself is pretty spectacular, the view from the top (reached via an elevator, thank goodness) is even more amazing.
