Ben Spies, Ignite Pramac Racing Team

Continuing the theme of brightly coloured motorcycles and riders, here’s US rider Ben Spies of Ignite Pramac Racing at Circuit of the Americas on Saturday afternoon.

My final haul from the weekend’s racing was 18 publishable shots from about 800 taken and 202 kept (good enough for low resolution or close duplicates of other good ones). The 18 sounds low but these are my favourites from the event. I’m very happy with the 202 number this time around.

Looking at the metadata, it seems that the panning sweet-spot for motorcycles is 1/250 when shooting with that 400mm lens. This gives enough blur in the surroundings to give a real impression of speed while giving me a very acceptable number of keepers. I was using shutter speeds between 1/60 and 1/250 and the hit rate at the lower speeds (of which this image is one) is very much lower than at 1/250.

Thanks, Eje. Of the ones I’ve posted so far, the Cal Crutchlow image from yesterday is my favourite. I have another dozen or so that are similar so I’ll probably post them all in an album on G+ of FB and keep them in reserve for later blog posts.
