NXNW 2013: Sunrise at Dead Horse Point

Our first sunrise shoot of last weekend’s trip was at Dead Horse Point State Park just outside the entrance to Canyonlands National Park. Despite the fact that this was our “plan B” location (after jogging around over a bunch of dirt roads for 30 minutes in Justin’s truck, we decided we really didn’t know how to get to Marlboro Point), I can’t imagine a better canyon overlook location. The view was spectacular with spires and ridges stretching as far as the eye could see.

For the technically minded, this is the first picture I’ve processed using the HDRSoft “Export to 32 bit” plugin for Lightroom. This merges a set of brackets into a 32-bit TIFF file which you can then process in Lightroom directly using the normal Camera Raw sliders. I’m sure I’ll be using this a lot more for realistic HDR work moving forward.
