Ah, the power of focal length! This shot was taken from pretty much the same place next to Mesa Arch as yesterday’s but using a far longer lens. If you look at the centre of yesterday’s picture, you can probably pick this scene out from just beneath the arch.
Yesterday’s image was shot with a 15mm fisheye lens but I swapped this for the 28-300mm and zoomed in to get this picture.
As you’ve heard me say several times before, I love tonal recession and this is another of my favourites. Whereas the earlier shot of Justin setting up a picture probably has more layers, I love the diversity in the shapes in this composition. This picture is also a lot closer to the actual colour of the scene than the earlier one where I toned it to a cool blue instead of the native brown/sepia.
Sorry for the spelling, typing on the road

Really like the compression Dave – definitely a different take on the recession!
This trip has yielded some amazing images. The tonal recession is epic. I like the use of the long lens to zoom in and just feature a small bit of the total landscape.

I’m pretty happy with the pictures from this trip but, then again, it’s tricky not to get great pictures when the landscape is so spectacular. As far as these recession shots go, a long lens is absolutely essential to compress the layers together like this.
