Grand Canyon by Night

We’re just home from our road trip so here’s the first picture I’ve had a chance to process on my PC rather than the iPad. This shot was taken well after sunset from the south rim trail right in front of Thunderbird Lodge. The building on the left is the Lookout Studio, one of the many gift shops you can find in that area.

While the Grand Canyon is undoubtedly a spectacle you have to see, the park felt a bit like Disneyland to me – very busy and not at all “natural” at least in the areas we spent our one day there. For a quieter, closer-to-nature canyon experience, we definitely enjoyed Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the Texas panhandle more though, in fairness, we weren’t doing any hiking at Grand Canyon. Perhaps if we had a few days and time to hike down into the canyon, my feelings would change.

Spectacular photo, Dave! Love the way you captured/processed the light in the windows of the building as well as the overall tone of the canyon. Also sounds like you guys had a great time. Well done!

Thanks, Evan. It was a great trip! For this shot, I went looking for something that would give me some contrasting colour and the gift shop fit the bill nicely. Without it, I reckon the shot wouldn’t have worked at all.
