Kayla

OK, so last weekend wasn’t all photographic doom and gloom. One photographic activity that I really enjoy is acting as mentor to a group of enthusiastic kids in the local 4-H club. We get together every few months and go somewhere to do a particular kind of shooting. This month’s meeting was on portraiture and, although the attendance was down due to the weather, we had fun taking outdoor pictures of each other and the parents and siblings who were there. Here’s my favourite shot which we set up as a demonstration. The model is Kayla and she went on to take some fabulous pictures of her parents using the same setup.

For the technically minded, this is a very simple portrait using only a single off-camera flash (camera left) with no modifier whatsoever (yes, I know the shadows would have looked better with a softbox but I didn’t have one with me). The dreamy background is courtesy of Nikon’s superb 85mm f/1.8D lens.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/1.8
  • Camera: NIKON D700
  • Focal length: 85mm
  • ISO: 200
  • Shutter speed: 1/90s
