Flame Skimmer

I spent some time at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center on Saturday playing with the macro gear and managed to grab a few shots of this Flame Skimmer (libellula saturata). This pretty large dragonfly, maybe 4 inches long, was patrolling an area of the formal garden area and coming back to roost about 6 feet up after each circuit. Being right around head height, I had the opportunity to shoot it from the side and underneath. For this image, I was using the 28-300mm lens with 56mm of extension tubes and a Nikon R1C1 macro flash.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/16
  • Camera: CORPORATION
  • Focal length: 210mm
  • ISO: 400
  • Shutter speed: 1/250s
