Monarchs at Pedernales Falls State Park

I spent yesterday morning out at Pedernales Falls State Park with a group of kids from our local 4-H club. We had intended shooting in the bird blind but there weren’t too many birds there so most of us switched our attention to the butterfly garden instead. I had no idea this even existed until yesterday’s visit but it was quite a find. We caught it in the middle of the Monarch migration and the place was absolutely chock full with hundreds of butterflies which rose in a cloud as you walked past the plants they were feeding on. Sit still for a few minutes, though, and they would come right back.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/5.6
  • Camera: CORPORATION
  • Focal length: 200mm
  • ISO: 400
  • Shutter speed: 1/1500s

For us technically inclined, what is a CORPORATION camera?

A “CORPORATION” camera indicates a bug in the PHP EXIF library which fails to correctly parse “NIKON CORPORATION” out of the file I’m uploading. I’m hoping (in vain, it seems) that this will be fixed in some update but it’s been this way for a year and I’m almost on the point of just removing that field from the data displayed on the posts.

I have been going out there about 8 times a year for the last ten years and never knew about a butterfly garden! Timing is everything of course, which is why I space out my visits over the years, to catch the different seasons of flora and fauna. Wonderful picture! Don
