The Stars at Night are Big and Bright

They say that the stars are big and bright in Texas and Dripping Springs is an International Dark Sky site but I’m sorry to have to break it to all my friends back home that Fiji has them soundly beaten. Sitting here in the middle of the Pacific with no significant light pollution within 1000 miles, the sky here is unbelievably clear!

Here’s a shot from last night, taken as the clouds were beginning to roll back in. You can see the two Magellanic Clouds (small globular clusters which orbit the Milky Way) in the center of the picture. The light on the horizon is someone fishing.

By the way, don’t believe the EXIF – this was a 30 second exposure with a bit of light painting to fill in the palm tree.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/2.8
  • Camera: NIKON D810
  • Focal length: 14mm
  • ISO: 3200
  • Shutter speed: 1s
