Micro-islands, Fiji

The coast of Vanua Levu (and presumably the other main Fijian islands) is studded with micro-islands, many supporting a surprisingly diverse collection of wildlife in only a few square metres of space. Here are a few, captured in infra-red, that we saw from a beach near Savusavu. These rocks seem to support a breeding colony of white terns (Gygis alba) and you can see several of them in the sky in this image. The closer we got to the rocks as we walked out at low tide, the louder the birds became so we didn’t push our luck and get too close!

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/16
  • Camera: NIKON D5000
  • Exposure bias: -1EV
  • Focal length: 20mm
  • ISO: 200
  • Shutter speed: 1/350s
