Paper Wasps in a Sotol

There are, apparently, 22 different species of insect known as “Paper Wasps” in North America and I must admit that I didn’t spend the time necessary to determine exactly which one these were. I found them building a new nest within the spiky fronds of a sotol plan at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center on Saturday morning. If you like gruesome insect stories, you’ll love these wasps. They use their stings to paralyse prey which the bring back to the nest and seal into a cell with an egg. Once the larva hatches, it has a ready-made meal right there, still alive but unable to move. The rest, I will leave to your imagination.

For the technically inclined...
