Bulldogging at Wimberley Rodeo

On Saturday night, on part of a busy, fun, but very hot and sweaty weekend of shooting with Mike Criswell, we visited the annual 4th of July weekend rodeo in Wimberley. This is another local community event I look forward to each year, partly for the opportunity to shoot people doing this kind of thing and partly for the great atmosphere. Here we see one of the cowboys in the bulldogging (or steerdogging) competition. His job is to chase a running steer and catch it by jumping off his horse and wrestling it to the ground. Dramatic stuff!

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/2.8
  • Camera: NIKON D500
  • Focal length: 200mm
  • ISO: 2200
  • Shutter speed: 1/750s
