Green-Crowned Brilliant

The number and variety of hummingbirds in Costa Rica is quite staggering! I saw this green-crowned brilliant (Heliodoxa jacula) at the Monteverde Cloud Forest this morning where hundreds of the birds hang around feeders outside the cafe. I’m not keen on seeing red and yellow plastic feeders in hummingbird shots so I looked for the roosts they were using close by and tried to snag pictures with more natural backgrounds.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/5.6
  • Camera: NIKON D500
  • Focal length: 300mm
  • ISO: 1600
  • Shutter speed: 1/250s
