Malachite Butterflies

Selvatura Park near Monteverde, Costa Rica proved to be a fantastic place to visit during our trip last week. Among the various attractions there is a beautiful, enclosed butterfly garden containing many local species of butterflies and moths. These malachite butterflies (siproeta stelenes) had recently emerged from their chrysalises when we visited and were resting and drying their wings.

I don’t normally take a macro lens on trips but I’m very glad I did this time because many of the best photo opportunities turned out to be of small animals such as these butterflies, tree frogs or hummingbirds.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/13
  • Camera: NIKON D500
  • Focal length: 90mm
  • ISO: 800
  • Shutter speed: 1/125s
