Island Ecosystems




Enchanted Rock is a huge, pink granite batholith – one enormous chunk of solidified magma whose smooth surface wouldn’t appear to me to offer a great foothold for life. Despite this, in many depressions on the summit, soil gathers and plants take root in little isolated ecosystems like this one. During our visit on Sunday, most of these were filled with bright yellow Brown-eyed Susan flowers.
