New Lanark (4)

The village store in New Lanark was closed on the day I took this shot a couple of weeks ago. This was one of the central parts of David Dale and Robert Owen’s great social experiment in the mill town. Whereas other mill owners often operated a “truck” system where workers were paid in vouchers which could only be redeemed in the owner’s factory store, often for adulterated or inferior quality products, New Lanark workers were free to spend their salaries as they choose and the village store offered decent quality at fair prices.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/8
  • Camera: E-M5MarkII
  • Focal length: 20mm
  • ISO: 200
  • Shutter speed: 1/500s
