Gentoo on an Iceberg

We spotted this Gentoo penguin struggling to get onto a grounded iceberg in a bay at Petermann Island, Antarctica during a zodiac cruise on December 31st, 2024. The waves washed it on and off the floe several times before it caught a foothold and managed to climb to this position. Gentoos were definitely the most common penguins we saw during the trip and they popped up at all but one of the landing sites we visited. All other species were very much more localised and appeared at only a small number of locations.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/6.7
  • Camera: OM-1
