Staying with the Gentoo penguin theme, here’s a nest we spied on the Orne Islands during our January 1st shore landing. This parent (you can’t easily tell whether Gentoos are male or female and both parents take turns tending the nest) was feeding two tiny chicks not more than a few days old so I spent 15 minutes or so taking pictures to try to get an image with both chicks’ heads visible. I’m delighted to report that this shot won the wildlife category in the on-ship photo contest at the end of the expedition and even more delighted to note that one of Drew’s pictures won in the comedy category too.
