Shackleton’s epic 1916 rescue mission, sailing 800 miles in a lifeboat from Elephant Island in Antarctica to seek help for his stranded crew, reached land in King Haakon Bay on the north-west tip of South Georgia. We visited the site on December 26th, hiking to his camp site and cruising the bay to view the glacier over which three members of the expedition next climbed to reach a whaling station on the other side of the island.
