Elephant Seal, Gold Harbour

The little guy in yesterday’s image was probably about a foot long and tipped the scales at maybe 5 or 6 pounds. Today, we jump to the other end of the seal scale with a female Southern Elephant Seal (Mirounga leonina) seen on the beach at Gold Harbour, South Georgia on Christmas Day, 2024. This young lady was probably something around 12 feet in length and could weight up to 2000lbs. The males of the species, who weren’t around during our visit, are absolute monsters and can reach up to 8800lbs!

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/4.5
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Focal length: 241mm
  • ISO: 400
  • Shutter speed: 1/1000s
