Texas Cowboys and Smokey the Cannon

This is a well-known sight at UT Longhorn football games and one which, if you happen to be lucky enough to be wandering around the sidelines, you really have to be aware of!

Each time the Longhorns score, Smokey the Cannon lets rip to celebrate. If you happen to be walking in front of it at the time, you are in for a serious surprise (and likely damaged eardrums).

The first Smokey was built in 1953 and the latest, rather larger model is mark 3 entered service in 1988. The cannon is operated by the members of the Texas Cowboys, a UT service organisation.

Observant viewers will notice a GoPro camera attached to the cannon barrel. Apparently this was placed there by one of the TV stations covering the game that night.
