Congress Avenue stretches eight and a half miles through the centre of Austin. At its northern end, you’ll find the Blanton Museum of Art and the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. The Capitol is four blocks south of there and forms what most people think of as the end of Congress because it straddles the route of Congress Avenue, erasing the street for several blocks. Continuing southward, you pass through the heart of downtown Austin (north-south streets are numbered relative to Congress Avenue), cross the famous Ann Richards Bridge with its colony of Mexican Freetail bats then enter the trendy SoCo neighbourhood with it’s boutiques, bars and restaurants. The tourist section of SoCo ends around the point you reach St. Edward’s University and another five and a half miles of walking takes you to the end of the street at Slaughter Lane by the Southpark Meadows mall.
