Christmas Abstract

Given that it’s Christmas Eve, I decided to take a detour from my collection of Glasgow monochromes and delve into the archives for some Christmas images. Here’s one I shot back in 2011 on a photowalk along Austin’s 37th Street, famed for its neighbourhood Christmas light show.

In case you’re wondering how this effect was achieved, I set the camera on a tripod pointing at a Christmas tree, unfocused the lens somewhat so that the lights became blobs, then took a longish, 1 second exposure while zooming in.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/2.8
  • Camera: NIKON D700
  • Focal length: 70mm
  • ISO: 100
  • Shutter speed: 1/1s
