Honey Bee on Indian Blanket

I’ll interrupt the planned rodeo theme this week because, believe it or not, I actually took some photos yesterday! I spent the hour before sunset in an amazing field of Indian Blankets (or Firewheels or Gaillardia pulchella) taking pictures of honey bees at work. The bees in question come from hives operated by Sally Bee’s Honey Company in Dripping Springs.

In this image, a worker, heavily laden with pollen already, gathers nectar from an Indian Blanket. In case you’re interested, she’s a Western Honey Bee with latin name Apis Melifera.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/11
  • Camera: E-M1MarkII
  • Focal length: 150mm
  • ISO: 640
  • Shutter speed: 1/250s
