Bee in a Field of Firewheels

A western honey bee (Apis Mellifera) gathers pollen and nectar from an Indian Blanket or Firewheel flower near Dripping Springs, Texas on April 28th, 2020.

I used a different approach from the previous macros I’ve posted when taking this shot. Rather than getting in close and using extension tubes, I was about 15 feet away with a ridiculously long lens (300mm with 1.4x teleconverter giving a 35mm equivalent focal length of 820mm) focused as close to the camera as it could. Next time I’m out, I may try some extension tubes with this combination to see how close I can focus when using them too.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/8
  • Camera: E-M1MarkII
  • Focal length: 420mm
  • ISO: 400
  • Shutter speed: 1/500s
