Mature Widow Skimmer

This is another of the dragonflies I found at Nutty Brown Farm last Thursday evening. On returning to my computer and trying to identify it, I was most surprised to find that it’s also a Widow Skimmer (Libellula luctuosa) despite looking nothing at all like the yellow and black insects I’ve photographed for years. Apparently this species undergoes a dramatic transformation during adulthood, starting yellow and black and transitioning to solid blue as they age.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/5.6
  • Camera: E-M1MarkII
  • Focal length: 300mm
  • ISO: 1600
  • Shutter speed: 1/250s
