Cattle Egrets




Cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) in Louisiana. During an airboat swamp tour, we came across of flock of a hundred or more of these birds feeding in marshy grassland. I had never seen so many in a single group before. I didn’t recognize them due to the orange crests and breast plumage but it turns out that this is their breeding season coloring. For the rest of the year, they revert to pure white.
