Intricate Wings

Details of a Flame Skimmer (Libellula saturata) dragonfly’s wings seen at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin on June 19th, 2021.

This image was generated from three frames taken in a burst which I then aligned and blended in Photoshop. The depth of field in each picture was minimal but blending the three resulted in an image that looks very much better than any of the individual shots. I expected that focus stacking would only be useful in very well controlled conditions involving stationary subjects, shooting from a tripod and careful refocusing between exposures but I’ve found that it can still be used effectively with handheld burst sequences as long as the subject isn’t moving too much between frames.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/5.6
  • Camera: E-M1MarkII
  • Focal length: 125mm
  • ISO: 250
  • Shutter speed: 1/250s
