A Blur of Skimmers

Let’s leave space hardware for a while. Here’s a shot I grabbed while out for a walk shortly after sunrise on Monday morning. There were a couple of flocks of Black Skimmers (Rynchops niger) on the beach so I hung around and tried to get some images of the birds in flight. They look somewhat weird and ungainly while sitting on the sand (which they seem to spend the majority of their time doing) but, in the air, they are amazingly elegant and agile.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/6.7
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Focal length: 100mm
  • ISO: 200
  • Shutter speed: 1/125s
