Wimberley Fire Truck

A week or so ago, I joined John Rogers at station 4 in Wimberley to create an image of one of their trucks. We did this by light-painting, a process involving taking many images of the scene each manually lit using handheld lights swept across various parts of the truck, then blending the resulting partial images into a whole in Photoshop. The process of capturing the exposures took somewhere around two hours but about half of that was waiting for full darkness after taking dusk background images. Postprocessing took me another couple of hours. I’m delighted with the results and will definitely be looking for other opportunities to use this technique in the future.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/16
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Focal length: 21mm
  • ISO: 200
  • Shutter speed: 16s
