F-1 Nozzle

Let’s delve into the archives for something different this week. With SpaceX’s 6th Starship/SuperHeavy launch scheduled for this afternoon, a few pictures of space hardware would seem appropriate so here’s one from my trip to Florida last March. This shows one of the Rocketdyne F-1 engine nozzles on the Saturn V displayed at the Kennedy Space Center. Five of these monsters burned 2.5 tonnes of kerosene and liquid oxygen per second, lifting the rocket to a height of 42 miles and a speed of over 6000mph before first stage separation.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/4
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Focal length: 54mm
  • ISO: 2000
  • Shutter speed: 1/90s
