Bathing Petrel

This rather gruesome looking Southern Giant Petrel (Macronectes giganteus) was taking a bath at Cooper Bay, South Georgia where it and a number of other petrels and skuas had been feasting on a seal carcass. We saw these birds at all the locations we visited on the trip and, although smaller than some of the albatrosses, they are still impressively large with wingspans of over 6 feet.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/4.5
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Focal length: 400mm
  • ISO: 800
  • Shutter speed: 1/1500s
