Sunset Crater

Another of our Sunday locations was Sunset Crater National Monument which sits about half way between Flagstaff and Wupatki National Monument. Here, trails wend their way through “new” lava fields (the last eruption was in 1085) and around the base of this large cinder cone. As far as I can remember, the name “Sunset Crater” derives from the red/orange tones in the cinders around the top of the dome which contrast with the overall dark grey of the rest of the cone.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/8
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Exposure bias: -5/10EV
  • Focal length: 28mm
  • ISO: 200
  • Shutter speed: 1/350s
