A group of Macaroni Penguins (Eudyptes chrysolophus) seen processing along the shoreline at Cooper Bay, South Georgia on December 25th, 2024. Macaronis are regarded as the most numerous penguin species in the world with an estimated population of around 18 million individuals. We didn’t see many of them during the trip and apparently their numbers have been in significant decline over the last few decades leading them now to be classified as “vulnerable”. It is thought that this may be due to recent declines in krill densities (krill being the penguin’s major food source) caused by climate change and commercial krill harvesting.
