Northern Giant Petrel

A Northern Giant Petrel (Macronectes Halli) soaring over the Scotia Sea between the Falkland Islands and South Georgia on December 21st, 2024. I originally identified this as a Southern Giant Petrel but, after some more reading, I realise that it’s actually a Northern Giant Petrel. The ranges of these two similar birds overlap but the Northern Giant Petrel has a red or pink end to its beak whereas its Southern cousin has a greenish tip instead.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/4.5
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Focal length: 300mm
  • ISO: 200
  • Shutter speed: 1/1600s
