Hondius in Fortuna Bay

With M.V. Hondius in the news, I’ve been wandering through my photos from our trip on the ship back in December 2024. Here’s a photo from what I remember as a very exciting morning – our first landing on the island of South Georgia on December 23rd. In this image, Hondius is moored in Fortuna Bay and conducting zodiac operations.

In latest news of the crisis on board Hondius, the World Health Organization suggests that the most likely source of the hantavirus that has taken the lives of 4 passengers and likely sickened several more was rodent contact in South America prior to boarding.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/8
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Focal length: 34mm
  • ISO: 200
  • Shutter speed: 1/750s
