Hondius at Petermann Island

M.V. Hondius at anchor off Petermann Island, Antarctica on December 31st, 2024 with a colony of Gentoo and Adelie penguins in the foreground.

Hondius is currently at the center of a crisis with a hantavirus outbreak on board having killed three passengers and sickened several others. As I write this, the BBC is reporting that the most seriously ill patients on Hondius are to be airlifted off the ship, currently at Cape Verde, before it sails for the Canary Islands where Spanish authorities will look after the remaining passengers and crew.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/5.6
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Exposure bias: +5/10EV
  • Focal length: 35mm
  • ISO: 200
  • Shutter speed: 1/750s
