Pieous, Cedar Valley

This was a fun image I made last week after being asked by owner Josh to take a picture of the original Pieous location now that they have moved to their shiny, new restaurant about half a mile away. The basic technique here was to light-paint the scene with a handheld strobe then blend the resulting exposures into the final shot. I set the camera up on a tripod with a radio trigger on the shutter release, then walked around pointing the flash at pieces of the scene and using the other radio trigger to shoot each frame. Overall, 50 individual frames were needed to create the blended result.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/5.6
  • Camera: NIKON D810
  • Focal length: 14mm
  • ISO: 200
  • Shutter speed: 1s
