During our drive from Volcano back to Kailua-Kona Airport, we took a side-trip down to Punalu’u Beach, famous for its black sand. The sand was the main draw but, when we got there, we found the beach was also a favourite resting place for Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles who crawl up onto the warm sand and fall asleep while soaking in some rays.
We walked down the beach and spotted 7 turtles in 100 yards, 6 lying on the sand and one swimming around in a tide pool.
