Mauna Loa Foothills, Hawaii
Of the Hawaii images I've edited so far, I'm pretty sure that this shot showing the receding foothills of Mauna Loa is my favourite.
Thanks to 5 hours of jetlag, we managed to get up and out really early for the first few mornings of the trip. I saw this view as we drove north on highway 19 just outside Waikoloa one morning at about 7am but I was driving and we were trying to get somewhere so I didn't pull over. I spent the rest of the day kicking myself so, when the light turned out to be the same the next morning, I did pull over and got the shot I had been looking for.
The cone near the centre of the image is one of the side vents of the volcano with the main part of the mountain being represented by the gentle gradient seen in the farthest, lightest layer of the image.
