Common Thread Waisted Wasp

A Common Thread Waisted Wasp (Ammophila procera) seen on a cornflower at Nutty Brown Farm near Dripping Springs, Texas on May 2nd, 2020.

A few people have asked me about the equipment I use to get these close-up shots. Aside from the information you’ll find in the EXIF section below, the only special addition is a couple of extension tubes. These fit behind any normal lens and allow it to focus closer than normal (at the expense of no longer being able to focus to infinity). In this case, I used 21mm of extension behind a 40-150mm lens zoomed to 150mm. This allowed me to shoot from about 18 inches to 2 feet away from the subject.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/4.5
  • Camera: E-M1MarkII
  • Focal length: 150mm
  • ISO: 320
  • Shutter speed: 1/250s
