Factory Butte Sunrise

Factory Butte is a very prominent and dramatic feature near Hanksville, Utah. We spent yesterday’s sunrise there and were rewarded with some lovely skies and gorgeous light. The frames from which the image was generated were shot from a drone right as the sun crested the horizon.

In processing today’s picture, I used a different workflow from my usual go-to for landscape drone shots. Rather than using AuroraHDR, I tried Lightroom’s own HDR merge function and the tools in the develop module, applying some tricks learned from Armando Martinez to yield this image. The result maintains the drama of the Aurora version but feels more natural to me and I very much like the feel.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/2.8
  • Camera: FC3411
  • Exposure bias: -1.3EV
  • Focal length: 8.38mm
  • ISO: 100
  • Shutter speed: 1/200s
