Dark Spire

This was probably the most surreal of the locations we visited last year during our October NxNW trip to Utah. A circular bowl in the grey mesas outside Hanksville contains this tall spire at its centre. Seen from the side in this drone shot the spire is quite wide but most of the images we took that evening were from a point along the spine seen on the left of this picture and from that angle, the spire looks thin and reminded me somewhat of the lunar monolith from 2001 although, admittedly, not as regularly shaped.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/2.8
  • Camera: FC3411
  • Exposure bias: -1.3EV
  • Focal length: 8.38mm
  • ISO: 100
  • Shutter speed: 1/640s
