Today was our first penguin day! We spent it visiting a couple of different bird colonies on New Island, one of the 704 islands comprising the Falkland Islands sitting right at the north western edge of the group. Our morning shore excursion took us to a breeding colony of Black-browed Albatross, Blue-eyed Cormorants and Rockhopper Penguins.
The Rockhoppers, strictly Southern Rockhoppers (Eudyptes chrysocome), really do hop around the rocks in their nesting areas. I always think they look grumpy, giving visitors a “get off my lawn” vibe, but they are fascinating to watch and pretty comical too.
