King Penguin Patterns

The King Penguin rookery at St. Andrews Bay on South Georgia is the world’s largest. The last official count in 2021 estimated 150,000 birds but recent observation suggests that it is now closer to 400,000. Regardless of the actual number, however, the view is spectacular as the individual birds blur into an abstract pattern of brown and grey stripes due to the way the chicks huddle together into creches for protection as their parents leave to fish.

For the technically inclined...

  • Aperture: ƒ/4.5
  • Camera: OM-1
  • Focal length: 200mm
