After a year on land as brown fuzzballs, King Penguins shed their fuzz and prepare to head out to sea for the first time. Here’s one disreputable-looking teenager, seen at Gold Harbour, South Georgia on Christmas Day, in the final stages of its first moult, just waiting for the mohawk to disappear. At this stage, the juveniles don’t have the vibrant orange and yellow colours of more mature birds.
